About Amelia

I can't really remember a time when picking up a pair of scissors didn't feel like the most natural thing in the world, but I know that my true passion for hair started when I was just 15. After two weeks of work experience in a salon, I was ready to quit school and start my career. I'd fallen head over heels in love with hairdressing.

Thankfully, my parents persuaded me to work part-time alongside my GCSEs, but soon after leaving school I started an official apprenticeship and by 2004 I was a fully qualified hairdresser.

I felt an overwhelming need to get back to what I'd always loved doing; hair.

My journey from apprentice to running a city centre salon in Bristol has been an interesting one. Having spent a few years working in a small salon, I took a brief detour into fitness instructing before travelling the world for 9 months. After settling in Bristol with the boyfriend that would eventually become my husband, I felt an overwhelming need to get back to what I'd always loved doing; hair.

The Styling Lounge started life in a small space at my local gym. I maxed out my credit card to buy everything I'd need and teamed up with a sister salon in Swindon. After six months, I was able to relocate to a larger space in the same building and it wasn't long before the salon was fully booked.

The New Salon

Just over 12 months later, the entire gym relocated to its current location on Union Street. I'd been allocated a space, but it was down to me to 'build a salon'. With no running water, no electricity and no ceiling, it seemed like an impossible feat, but with the help of friends and family, and with only two weeks to go until Christmas, we managed to get The Styling Lounge up and running in record time.

The three of us make a great team and the place is often bursting with clients.

Keen to fill the new, bigger space, I welcomed a second stylist, Brad, and two years later Emma Philpott of Nail Enhancements made her mark and planted her nail table in the middle of the salon. The three of us make a great team and the place is often bursting with clients.

When I'm not cutting, colouring, primping or preening my lovely clients, you'll probably find me working hard in the gym. The rest of the time, I live above the pub my husband manages with our two cats, a house rabbit and a snake. Aside from hair and beauty, my idea of heaven is quality time with friends and family, good food and great wine. Or a large G&T, I'm not fussy!
